Shadowings

The inspiration to compose Shadowings for viola and live electronics came from the image of the soloist standing in the middle of the stage with two speakers around her forming something like wings. The electronics create a shadow, appearing and disappearing around the main viola part. All the electronics are modifying the sound of the instrument in real time and no prerecorded material is used in the piece. Shadowings is dedicated to Diane Phoenix-Neal who commissioned the piece and premiered it at the Contemporary Music Festival at James Madison University in 2019.
